Job Summary

The Senior Maintenance Technician is responsible for leading maintenance activities to ensure manufacturing, laboratory, and support equipment operates reliably, safely, and in compliance with regulatory requirements. This role provides day-to-day supervision and technical guidance to maintenance technicians and offers support with equipment calibrations, while coordinating preventive maintenance (PM) programs, breakdown response, and workload prioritisation. The Senior Maintenance Technician plays a critical role in maximizing equipment uptime, ensuring effective maintenance planning, and supporting continuous improvement within a regulated medical device environment.

Location & Working pattern

Primary working area: Keele office and production facilities. Occasional requirement to visit the Trentham facility. Standard working hours Monday – Friday 8am – 4pm with flexibility. Occasional overtime required.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead, supervise, and provide technical direction to maintenance technicians, ensuring effective execution of maintenance activities.
  • Provide support to the Calibration Engineer as needed, assisting with calibration activities, documentation, and troubleshooting to ensure compliance with company and regulatory standards.
  • Ensure all manufacturing, laboratory, and facility equipment is maintained in a safe, compliant, and operational condition.
  • Plan, schedule, and oversee preventive maintenance (PM) activities, ensuring PMs are completed on time and in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Coordinate and lead response to equipment breakdowns, troubleshooting issues, prioritising workload, and minimising downtime.
  • Assign and balance maintenance workload based on operational priorities, resource availability, and risk.
  • Review and approve maintenance and calibration records, ensuring accurate documentation and compliance with quality system requirements.
  • Support root cause investigations for equipment failures and implement corrective and preventive actions as required.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Production, Quality, and Facilities teams to support equipment performance, upgrades, and improvements.
  • Ensure maintenance activities comply with health and safety requirements and site procedures.
  • Support internal, customer, and regulatory audits by providing maintenance and calibration documentation and technical input.
  • Identify opportunities to improve maintenance effectiveness, reliability, and efficiency through continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential requirements

  • Formal training in industrial maintenance, equipment troubleshooting, or reliability practices.
  • Training in health and safety, risk assessment, and safe systems of work.
  • Industrial Maintenance Technology Diploma (or similar).
  • Extensive hands-on experience in equipment maintenance within a regulated manufacturing environment, preferably medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or similar industries
  • Strong experience troubleshooting and resolving equipment breakdowns under time-critical conditions.
  • Knowledge of LOTO (lock Out Tag Out) procedures.
  • Strong technical knowledge of manufacturing and laboratory equipment maintenance.
  • Solid understanding of preventive and corrective maintenance principles.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage competing maintenance demands effectively.
  • Strong leadership and team-management capability.
  • Proactive, organized, and methodical approach to work.
  • High sense of accountability and ownership for equipment performance.
  • Calm and decisive under pressure, particularly during breakdown situations.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Compliance with all company policies, quality system requirements, and health and safety procedures.

Desirable requirements

  • Working knowledge of quality systems and regulatory requirements relevant to medical device manufacturing (e.g., ISO 13485)
  • Leadership or supervisory training is desirable.
  • Attended official Siemens, Rockwell, Beckhoff, Motion control hands on training courses.
  • IET Wiring Regulations 18 Edition / A4: 2026 Edition qualification.
  • PUWER (Provision & Use of Work Equipment Regulations training.
  • PLC and Automation: PLC fault-finding skills (Siemens, Allen Bradley, Beckhoff).
  • Attended official Siemens, Rockwell, Beckhoff PLC, hands on training courses.
  • Experience with AC inverter drives, servo drives, and robotics.
  • Safe working knowledge of Electrical control panels.
  • Systems Knowledge: Knowledge of hydraulics & pneumatics.
  • Knowledge of CMMS or maintenance planning systems.
  • Ability to interpret equipment manuals, schematics, and technical documentation.
